| Hagia
Sophia in Turkey |
|||
Emperor
Justinian commissioned Hagia Sophia Church. The construction was
begun in 532 and its opening ceremony
took place in 537. It was dedicated to Christ as Holy Wisdom. The architects
of the building are Anthemios of Tralles and Isidoros of Miletos. With
its huge dome and immense dimensions, Hagia Sophia was a real challenge
for the Ottoman architects. It was an inspiration source and also a
representative of a conquered culture, which was to be surpassed. Sinan
accomplished this difficult task. He reached to an excellence far-surpassed
Hagia Sophia's heavy monumentality (Suleymaniye and Selimiye Mosques).

|||
Gloriously
standing as a testimony of great love, Taj Mahal not only awes a
person with its normous size and immeasurable
beauty but has an uncanny way of awakening the sensation of 'Love at
first sight' as soon as one crosses the threshold of the main entrance
of this pure white marble structure. Shah Jahan built this beautiful
edifice as a tribute to her late empress Mumtaz Mahal, who died in
1631 in Agra, India. Positioned on a plot of land along the banks of
the River Yamuna, it sprawls across more than forty-two acres of land
and people believe that Shah Jahan chose this site because of it serene
and peaceful environment and spectacular views. Read

| Perform
the Rituals of Hajj and Umrah |
|||
The
pilgrimage is the religious high point of a Muslim's life and an
event that every Muslim dreams of undertaking.
Umrah, the lesser pilgrimage, can be undertaken at any time of the
year; Hajj, however, is performed during a five-day period from the
ninth through the thirteenth of Dhu Al-Hijjah, the twelfth month of
the Muslim lunar calendar.
Performing these rituals, known as the Hajj, is the fifth pillar of
Islam and the most significant manifestation of Islamic faith and unity.
Undertaking the Hajj at least once is a duty for Muslims who are physically
and financially able to make the journey to Makkah. Read

| Eyüp
Sultan Mosque is the holiest site in Istanbul Turkey |
|||
Eyüp
is the
holiest site in Istanbul Turkey as well as one of the most sacred
places in the Islamic world, the Eyüp Sultan Mosque
was erected by Mehmet the Conqueror over the tomb of Halid bin Zeyd
Ebu Eyyûb (known as Eyüp Sultan), the standard-bearer for
the Prophet Mohammed as well as the last survivor of his inner circle
of trusted companions. It is popularly accepted that while serving
as commander of the Arab forces during the siege of 668 to 669, Eyüp
was killed and buried on the outskirts of the city. One of the conditions
of peace after the Arab siege was that the tomb of Eyüp be preserved.
The burial site was "discovered" during Mehmet the Conqueror's
siege on the city, although the tomb is mentioned in written accounts
as early as the 12th century. Read

| Sultan
Ahmed Mosque or Blue Mosque, Istanbul, Turkey |
|||
Istanbul's
imperial Mosque of Sultan Ahmet I (Sultan Ahmet Camii) is called
the Blue Mosque
because of its interior tiles. The mosque is the
masterwork of Ottoman architect Sedefkâr Mehmed Aga under the
order of Sultan Ahmet I. It is a must see for Istanbul because it is
the only
mosque in Turkey that has six minarets(normally four). It is impressive
for it architecture design both inside and outside. There is an interesting
story of the mosque; according to it, Sultan Ahmet I wanted to have
a minaret made of gold which is "altin" in Turkish. The architect
misunderstood him as "alti" which means "six" in
English. However, when the architect was shivering as "am I going
to be beheaded?", the Sultan Ahmed I liked the minarets so much.
Prior to that time, no sultan had a mosque with 6 minarets. Read

| The
Basilica Cistern of Istanbul : Ancient Dark Wet Mysterious |
|||
The
Basillica Cistern in English) is one of the largest cistern in the
world and one of the most popular tourist attractions of Istanbul.
This facility, preserved up to the present day, was built in the 6th
century by order of Emperor Justinian as a reservoir for the Great
Palace
of the Byzantine Empire. It is 140 m long and 70 m wide. The vault
is supported by 336 columns, 8 m tall. After the invasion
of Istanbul by Ottomans, they didn't notice the cistern almost 100
years. Then, it is discovered because people
were fishing there. Pulsing lights, water dripping from the ceiling
and music
played over strategically placed speakers add an air of mystery to
the place. You can see fish swimming in several areas. It is a tradition
to throw coins and wish for. Interestingly there are two medusa heads
supporting the column as in the photos heads down. Read
